Sermon Reprisal - March 1st, 2009

March 8th, 2009

In Mark 1:9-15 the gospel writer mentions Jesus’ baptism followed by his temptation in the desert by Satan.  The voice from heaven affirms Jesus’ identity: “You are my Son, whom I love, with you I am well pleased.”  Satan questions his identity: “If you are the son of God, tell this stone to become bread . . . if you are the Son of God throw yourself down from here. . .”  Even though we may not hear voices from heaven or have dramatic confrontations in the desert with the devil, most of us are very familiar with conflicting voices in our heads.  We have mental tapes that we replay endlessly.  These tapes remind us of the things that have been said to us or about us.  Some of them are very negative – “You’re ugly, you’re no good, you’ll never amount to anything . . .”  Others are positive and affirming.  The problem is that the volume of the negative often overwhelms the positive and reinforces our bent toward self-rejection.  This self-rejection is the greatest enemy of our spiritual life because it contradicts the sacred voice, the voice of God that claims us, the voice that is constantly saying to us: “You are my child, whom I love, with you I am well pleased.”  I pray that this week you’ll hear the voice of God above all the other voices.

This coming Sunday we will focus on the voice of Jesus who invites us to be his disciples and calls us to follow him.  Jesus promises that following him move us from death to life.  I look forward to sharing this rich truth with you as we worship together.

New Adult Small Group Opportunity

March 4th, 2009

Have you tried multiple diets and still seem unable to lose weight and keep it off?  I can relate – for years I’d diet and lose weight, then stop dieting and gain even more than I lost.  After losing 120 pounds, gaining 70 pounds back, then losing it again, I found my answer – an answer tailored to my personality and lifestyle.

Most diet books and diet programs tell a dieter WHAT to eat and do, assuming that it is a lack of information that is causing the person to need to diet.  After doing several diets, dieters already know the basic principles.  While more information is useful, the real issue is most likely within the dieter’s lifestyle and approach to change, rather than a lack of information.  Personality, lifestyle and preferences are unique.

I’m starting a small group of between 5 and 8 people that will meet for five sessions in April and May to help people develop their own personalized approach to weight loss. You’ll learn about yourself, evaluate your past successes and come up with an approach that is tailored to you – your strengths, your situation and your personality.  If you’re interested in learning more, please call or email Joni Miller at 301.916.2426 or joni1023@msn.com.
