Gaithersburg HELP is a nonprofit organization located in Montgomery County, MD. It provides individuals and families in the city of Gaithersburg and town of Montgomery Village with basic needs assistance. Services currently include food assistance, diapers and formula, emergency funding assistance for prescriptions and other short-term specific needs, transportation services and referral information to other government and service agencies. In 2014, Gaithersburg HELP responded to 20,000 individual requests for assistance. The number increased to over 25,000 in 2015.

Today the core foundation of Gaithersburg HELP includes 20 faith-based congregations and 160 volunteers working together to help those in need. A team of skilled translators helps serve the diverse community, especially Spanish-speaking clients. Grace is one of these faith-based congregations and has actively supported HELP for many years. In addition to our first Sunday food collections and monetary contributions, we have several members that deliver food donated at Grace to the HELP pantry, volunteer with HELP on a weekly basis by bagging food for pantry clients, and taking clients to medical appointments. Having an active volunteer force enables HELP to apply 99 cents of every donated dollar to client needs.

There are many ways to volunteer with HELP. Go to HELP’s website: www.gaithersburghelp.org and follow the link about volunteering. Fill out a volunteer application including your areas of interest and someone with get in touch with you. Also, there is always need for food donations for the pantry. Hosting a neighborhood or group sponsored food drive is another great way to get involved.
