You are invited to our third Faith in Action event, Brain Health & Dementia with Rev. Dr. Malcolm Frazier and author, Rev. Janice Hicks. While living with dementia or loving someone with this disease can be challenging to navigate, we can turn to our spirituality for understanding and hope. Grounding our conversation in the latest science of this brain disease, we will share the stages and symptoms of dementia, how spirituality can serve as a tool for connecting with those living with the disease and understanding that even as the mind is changing, the soul remains intact. This event is for anyone who is interested in learning more about dementia and spirituality.

Presentation followed by light lunch and discussion in Fellowship Hall. Doors will open at 9:30am, and the event will begin at 10:00am. Reserve your free ticket today!

About Rev. Janice Hicks

Janice Hicks is a native of Baltimore. After pursuing her education in Philadelphia and New York City, she lived mostly in Washington DC and Northern Virginia, and is happy now to be back in Maryland (Frederick County). Her first career was in chemistry as a university teacher, researcher and federal manager. Later in life she felt called to seminary (Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria VA) and was ordained a deacon in the Episcopal Diocese of Washington in 2018. What she loves about being a deacon is being with people in a spiritual way and the concern for social justice.

Currently Janice serves St. Anne’s Episcopal Church in Damascus MD. She is also a certified chaplain, serving full-time at Asbury Methodist Village in Gaithersburg MD, a continuing care retirement community. Her chaplaincy training was at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. She enjoys science and religion, and she has co-authored a book entitled Redeeming Dementia: Spirituality, Theology and Science, which was inspired by her caregiving of her mother who lived with Alzheimer’s. She has a website on this topic www.spiritualityanddementia.org.
